Pros Tell All: MUST TRY Spring Cleaning Methods

FemRefinery Spring cleaning and decluttering methods popular and quick pros tell all

My husband and I are selling her home and it is organized chaos around here. We are decluttering, spring cleaning, and moving all at the same time. Oh my!

The crazy part is we did this just last year, but the house didn’t sale at the price that we wanted so we waited until now to list it again.

Typically, I would just be doing some regular spring-cleaning around this time of the year but this time, spring-cleaning is different. This is the last time we will spring clean in this home of 9 years. (Sad face) It’s always a race for time to get all the things done. There is not enough time in the day and we both work full-time.

When we first started decluttering, it was a lesson in patience. Knowing there was a light at the end of the tunnel helped us achieve our goal one room at a time. Now we are at the point of actually listing the house next week so our house looks more like a model home. I absolutely love it! (Happy face)

Here are some methods from the pros to take spring-cleaning to the next level and how quickly it will be to implement.

The Minimalist Method

In the video, Anthony of Break the Twitch says decluttering is, “all about minimizing distractions and doing more of what matters.” They found a decluttering method called The Minimalist Game.  It goes something like this: find a friend or family member and each day of the month get rid of something you don’t need.

On day one, get rid of 1 thing. Day two, get rid of 2 things. Day 3, get rid of 3 items. Get it? So in one month, you have dozens and dozens of items gone.

It is a game, so it will be fun, but it takes 30 days. When you are spring-cleaning and decluttering it should take a weekend or a week at best. If you work full-time, building a business, and want time for yourself, a month of spring-cleaning will take too long. The Minimalist Game is just a game and won’t be a long-term method.

KonMari Method

Marie Kondo became famous for her KonMari Method (loved by celebs) of organization and storage, meant to inspire joy. The process goes like this: Does this item spark joy? Is it necessary? Does it work? Does it have a designated place to live?

The Process

In KonMari you sort by category- NOT by room.

You sort each category all at once – NOT a little at a time.

There’s a ton of content on the web about this method that I find interesting and some I find unusual. What I do know is that it is highly popular decluttering and organizing method. Kondo’s book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up is on my Audible wish list. It’s a best seller on Amazon. Have you read it? Let me know in the comments.

Spring cleaning using the KonMarie method is a cult classic. Although popular and effective, it’s not for someone in a hurry. You’ll need enough time to get into the KonMari principles to truly transform your space into a serene and inspirational abode.

Martha Stewart’s “Speedy Three” Method

When you’re in a rush, try these steps:

  1. Neaten all surfaces: Put away remotes and random items, and stack and straighten coffee-table books and magazines.
  2. Dust end tables, coffee tables, the mantel, and windowsills with an electrostatic duster, such as a Swiffer.
  3. Plump up any sofa and chair cushions, drape or fold blankets, and arrange throw pillows.

Martha, the queen of DIY, the maven of craftiness shows us how to spring clean in 3 steps. This is perfect for the busy entrepreneur and working mom. Get it, got it, good!

Capsule Method

The capsule wardrobe has been trendy for the last few years. It’s basically a minimalist way of styling your wardrobe. You wear only certain outfits and mix and match them. It is sort of like crafting a closet of uniforms. You can add accessories so it looks like a new outfit.

Now transform the capsule idea to spring-cleaning. What you will do here is make conscious decisions about your items and clothes. Your goal: only keep what you collectively mix and match to make your home and wardrobe as minimal and functional as possible.

This is quick to accomplishment over a weekend. There’s no “principles” to adhere to like KonMari.

Four Box Method

4 box method trash or keep declutter

Set up four boxes in a room and label them: Keep and use, give or sell, keep and store, trash. Place items into one of the four boxes, and then process each box according to the name. You could also have an Undecided box if you’re not sure what to do with a particular item yet. I recommend not to have an undecided box. Just do not have that stress. Life is too short. Ha!

This method is great if you are moving because you are putting things in boxes anyway.  If you are not moving, another version of this is the One Box Method below.

One Box Method

Anthony says this method was created by smashing together other similar philosophies into a simple concept: get rid of one thing every single day for a period of time. That thing can be literally one item, one filled box, or one filled bag per day.

Simple and quick. If you are not needing to get rid of a host of items, this one box method is so simple and can be a done on a flexible timeline.

Packing Party

Have some friends over and pack everything you own into boxes as if you were moving. Throughout the next few months, only take out the items you use. After about three months, the items left inside the boxes are sold or donated.

This is a perfect way to spring clean and declutter. Especially if you are moving, this method works like a charm because you only keep what you actually use.

Closest Hanger Method

So after we move into our new home, I will probably use this method to minimize my closet even more. Oprah brought a lot of attention to this method as another effective way to figure out what clothing and other items you actually use. You are meticulously tracking what you actually wear with the Closet Hanger method. The rest is donated or sold.

This is how it is done. Make sure the hangers are hanging the same direction. As you wear an item, turn the hanger in the opposite direction. Over time you will see what you haven’t worn. If you have not worn it in 6 months or 1 year, you probably can donate it or sell it.

If it’s Oprah approved, I like it!

I forgot to mention why we are moving, we are listing our beloved home to downsize. When we purchased the house when it was the two of us and the older kids would stay with us during the summers and every other weekend. Now they are grown and we have our little prince, so we don’t need all this house. Downsizing is not just for practical reasons, like less space to clean and organize; we want to clear space to make room for more joy, peace, and freedom.

How about you? Did you pick a spring cleaning method to try?
